We the People!

This was not my original blog, but in light of the continued hatred, ignorance, stupidity, prejudice, barbarism, homophobia, you get it. I could go on for days with words like this describing the current state of affairs of life in this world that we are born into.

We are born, we go to school, we make friends and then some of us realize that we are attracted to those friends. The concern is that we like that friend of the same-sex A Lot. We learn that we are different and instead of being able to celebrate that difference, we are told that we are wrong! Everything we hear, read and see, tells us – demands that we conform to society’s wishes, get in line, be like every other so-called normal person. What is normal? Who say’s what normal is in this country of America, land of the free and home of the brave?

My God, how many times can we say it? We are Gay. We are here to stay. We have been on earth since the beginning of time. We are born this way. We are not going to change for you or anyone else. We cannot hide who we are. We refuse to hide who we are. We will stand up and be counted and we will outnumber you. We are rich, poor, and middle class. We are Black, White, Americans, Spanish, German, French, Jewish, Italian, Swedish, Polish, Russian, English, Japanese, Chinese, Asian, Greek, Iranian, Hungarian, and Indian.

We are teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, judges, senators, mayors, governors, lobbyist, actors, singers, dancers, directors, producers, journalist, talk show host, radio personalities, accountants, model’s, writers, artist, gambler’s basketball player’s, football player’s, tennis players, golfers, ice-skaters, skiers, boxers, Olympians, builders, architects, military men and women, veterans, patriots, scholars, scientist, firemen and women, policemen and women, ministers, priest, bishops, mother’s father’s, brother’s and sisters. Just because you refuse to see us or accept us, it will not make us go away.

We continue to rise, to be proud to stand strong. We remain a constant reminder that we were born into this world just like you. We were not dropped from the sky, not sprung up from the ground like the dirt that you want to think we are. We will no longer think alone, we will think as one. United in knowing that when it comes right down to it, we can control the purse string’s of this world too. We have been said to have disposable income, just think what we could do with that income if we ban together and put that money towards a political candidate of our chosing,  who will represent us as a people.  Like such groups as NAACP, NOW, The Tea Party, Religious groups, just to name a few – Maybe we should form our own party. Lord knows we throw the best parties around!

We have friends and family who know us, love us and understand us. We have friends  in entertainment, politics, and the media: Oprah, Kathy Griffin, Lady Gaga, Cher, Ellen, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Cumming, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, T.R. Knight, Rupaul, Lance Bass, Melissa Ethridge, Liza Minelli, Sam Champion, Whoopi Goldberg, Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand, Jim McGreevey, Rupert Everett, Cyndi Lauper. We support you, we continue to support you. We need you and other’s like you to stand up and be counted for us and about us. We are calling you out. It’s time for you to show your true colors, time to let them show.

We will no longer stand for what you tell us who we are because now you know. We have always known. We are only different in who we love, not how we love.

  1. Well done man!
Yes we are strong a lot. We are everywhere. Although Ahmadinejad said “there is no gay in Iran” we have gays in Iran too. I am one of them. We keep our heads up and are proud. The average gay is more successful, wealthier and stronger than average str8! So you idiots better face the reality or you are missing a lot.
We will win sometime soon as the right side of history is always the winner.

  2. Thank you, James!
This has been a busy week for blogs, social networks etc. People are talking and making statements about this subject because of the recent news re. teen suicides and bullying. Hopefully people are listening to what we have to see. Homophobia is an age-old problem. Overcoming the myths, stereotypes, and attitudes against gay people is an uphill climb. We’re hammering against deep-rooted convictions and traditions. Homophobia is confirmed every day from pulpits and political platforms. Every mainstream religious group says God is against us, and people say Amen. Even many of our families and those who know us well, though they say they love us, they hold onto the idea that we chose our sexual identity as an act of rebellion against decency. My own family believes that myth because it comes from the mouths of preachers and leaders. I wish a boycott could end it, but it’s not that easy. I feel strongly that every closeted gay person must find the courage to come OUT. If I could, anybody can. I was an Evangelical preacher, pastor of a mega-church, husband, and father. I lost hundreds of “friends” as a result – no; thousands. Now, many years later, one by one, I’m still confronting the lies and prejudice in the hearts of old friends and family members who condemn me. Emails come every week – telling me to repent from my perversion. Even someone whose family needed help and I put food in their mouths when he was a child said he was repulsed by my “lifestyle”, and refuses speak to me. Their convictions run deep! Their fears prevent them from listening… afraid they’d insult God if they did. They believe the mis-interpretations of the Bible. It’s a tough nut to crack, James! I thought my college age daughter’s generation was far beyond homophobia – then the reports of these suicides. We need to do what you’re doing relentlessly – put the truth out there and encourage our LGBT brothers and sisters to become activists in their own circles. I love you!!!

  3. Thanks for writing this blog. Its amazing we still have to be subjected to such intolerance but again we lived under 8 years under “Family Values” from the Bush administration. We know how he values are citizens, taking innocent Americans to an unwanted war with thousands of casualties. Then there was his famous quote describing marriage as an institution between “a man and a woman.” This not only put us back many years but also encourages, I feel, discrimination and hatred to the gay and lesbian community.

It is unfortunate that young teenagers are being bullied and end up committing suicide because of being born gay. It is not a choice, it is a way of life for us. People that perpetuate hatred towards the gay and lesbian community need to be brought to justice the same way as if they would against one’s religion and color. It is time we take a stand and not allow this to happen to our community. Act Up refused to let down during the AIDS crises and we should not for our people.

  4. Hey Ethel!

A great piece of writing… Very insightful.

I promise to make the time to read your blogs from now on…

One small criticism… You did not mention Kylie Minogue in your list of Celebs who support gay rights. Very influential in Europe and the rest of the world…

    Lots of Love

  5. Well written! Maybe we do need to form our own political party. If the crazy nut bag Tea Partiers can become a viable political movement then we and our allies should do the same. We aren’t afraid to speak up and be heard… let them explain why we don’t deserve equal respect and equal representation under the law. I say no one could resist paying attention to the American Equality Party. Its worth speaking up and starting the ball rolling. The Tea Party started as a totally grassroots movement – poor out of work Americans who had an bone to pick with someone. Their visibility brought them donor millionaires. Our visibility would bring us donor billionaires – just as you said, Oprah, Gaga, Madonna, etc. Why should Hollywood be shamed out of getting into politics, when we allow business scoundrels, Wall Street, and the church to get involved in their own political ambitions? Liberal Hollywood cannot and would not be ignored if they had a party to carry their banner and their ideas.

  6. Favorite line: “Lord knows we throw the best parties around!” Nice play on words.

I’m surprised you left out Ms. Janet from the list!
